Bronze Member Posts: 362 ![]() | It's about time a thread was posted in this forum, and I'm proud to be the first. Well it's foam, and it will fly at parks so I guess this is an appropriate forum for this thread. I'm going to pause my EF Pawnee thread here: http://www.xtremeflyer.com/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=139&posts... so I can concentrate on getting Snoopy airborne. First off I would like to thank XF member planegoneby for drawing up and sending me templates to duplicate his scratch-built foam Snoopy, (Snoopy I). Maybe I could persuade him to post a pic of Snoopy I to this thread as an example of the eventual goal of this thread; a "Park Flyer Snoopy"! The grapevine tells me that Snoopy I was sighted patrolling over a hay field protecting a flock of grand children recently, perhaps we can get a first-hand report? Meanwhile I'll post a few pics of the templates and the foam sheet I'll begin with. Since the LHS doesn't carry Depron, I mistakenly ordered a sheet of EPP flexible foam, and due to time constraints I was forced to resort to using EPS foam insulation. This 5/8" foam is coated with a plastic film as a vapor barrier for insulation purposes, but after much picking, stripping and cussing I found a nice piece of EPS foam underneath. I also have several pieces of 5mm foamboard material, (from the craft store; foam posterboard), which is very stiff but light, and will be used for the figures of Snoopy and Woodstock and for bracing. I'll be spending some quality time with a pair of scissors and razor blades cutting out the templates and the various parts, and I'll take photos as I go, meanwhile try to visualize Snoopy surfing on a bone, (his surfboard), powered by a Rimfire 35-30-950 motor on 3S 2200mah lipo pack, spinning a 11 x 7sf prop out front. Pgb, (planegoneby), I might have to "adjust" your design due to the different materials, but the results should be very similar. My projected AUW should be well under 30oz, Snoopy I is around 22oz I believe, so despite the thicker "bone", Snoopy II should fly great on the above 20A continuous set up. One of the issues I anticipate is lots of little pieces of foam "dust" that will be covering my apartment floor soon, and at such times I appreciate the use of Depron as the chosen material for this build, but I'm going to use what I have. For glues I have epoxy, foam-safe CA, Gorilla Glue and both hi-temp and low-twmp glue guns available. I'll probably use epoxy for the carbon rod and tube reinforcements, and will use hot glue for the rest; I may also try "Fabritack" fabric glue, which sources in the foamie world tell me is the best foam glue of all, and all but instant setting. According to them the bonds formed are stronger than the foam itself, so I'll make a trip to Wal Mart and get some to try. I'm attaching pics of the uncut templates and the foam, thanks pgb; great job!! Well, it's time to start cutting templates and parts, stay tuned for more!

Hi Gleber! That's one of my throw rugs, the guitars are actually kind of accurate to scale and have the appearance of actual guitars. Other than a couple of foam slopers, this is my first scratch-build using foam and should be fun! I decided to go ahead and use the 6mm Depron I ordered, and will glue it down to the 5mm foamboard I have instead of using the EPS for the "bone". I'll use the EPS for reinforcing strips on the bottom of the board and for the bottom fins. Hopefully that will keep the foam "dust" down to a minimum, and should provide a sturdy platform of 11mm thickness. It may be a bit heavier than Snoopy I, but I don't need a 3D Snoopy, so I think it will be fine. I've seen vids of pgb's Snoopy I, and it definitely flies 3D, and amazingly well! Once I get comfy with how this "plane" flies, I may upgrade the motor to allow 3D flight, but my intention is to build a nice slow-flying fun flyer. Cutting out templates right now,

This foam stuff is all new to me, gonna take some getting used to it, but it should be fun! The vids I've seen of Snoopy I are amazing; I hope mine flies half as well!

Syd No Luck yet! Garret? I can get it to play, but can't figure out how even to save it to my laptop, let alone post it here; I'll keep trying.

I’ve seeing the “surfer” and its look like a lot of fun to fly. Back to the guitars, you could design a flying Guitar… it could be pretty neat!

I still can't figure out how to upload this video, sorry I'm so useless; I'll keep trying. Snoopy I flies amazingly well, and more like an airplane than you would think.....thanks for the surfer vid Gleber, very similar! Syd
